The Nazarene

(The following is excerpted from Dr. Husfelt’s forthcoming book The Greatest Lie Ever Told - a Manifesto for a Religious Revolution and a New Consciousness)

Since I have been in the presence of angels, I can give you some slight insight into these Otherworldly beings. I can verify as correct the knowledge that two assisting angels always accompany an archangel, as this was the case with the visitation. In addition, there are four commonly known primary archangels. They are Mikael (Michael), Raphael, Gabriel and Uriel. Of these four, Mikael is the only one that I can personally verify. I can also verify one thing that I know is not possible. And this is the ability to ‘channel,’ as many New Age channelers claim, angels or especially archangels. Pure and simple, this concept is an affront to the power and majesty of these awesome Otherworldly beings.

Besides these four archangels and according to tradition, there are a multitude of other angelic beings classified within nine celestial orders. These nine orders are divided into three triads with the highest order known as Seraphim and the lowest as Angels. The most interesting of the nine are the Seraphim, winged serpents. “Popularly known as the ‘fiery, flying serpents of lightning,’ who ‘roar like lions’ when aroused, the Seraphim are more identified with the serpent or dragon than any other angelic order.”[i] In fact, the Jewish priests translated the word Seraphim into Greek as Drakon from which we get our word for dragon.

For many ancient and current spiritual traditions the serpent/dragon has symbolized wisdom, enlightenment and immortality. For many people of the past, the serpent and shaman were one and the same representing the wisdom of earth and heaven. But this was not the case for the Christians of Paul and the Christian Church. Under the dictates of the Church, the serpent became demonized as being representative of Satan.

This was visually demonstrated by the Church in it’s imagery of the Virgin Mary trampling the serpent underfoot. In addition, the serpent in many cultures represented the feminine wisdom of the earth and clearly through Patriarchal dictate, the transforming life-giving and affirming wisdom of the serpent was turned into a symbol of ultimate evil.  

We must keep in mind that Jesus was Jewish and Judaism had a close relationship with the serpent dating from the fiery bronze serpent that Moses raised in the desert to heal the Israelites (Numbers 21:9). In point of fact, Jesus is often referred to as being from a town called Nazareth (Jesus of Nazareth). This may or may not have been true; however, it is a fact that he was connected with an esoteric sect called the “Nazarenes.” Therfore, it would be proper for him to be addressed as Jesus the Nazarene: 

Many authors have argued that "Nazarene" was not just one term that was used, but the dominant term, and that it was also used to describe Jesus himself. The chief argument for this claim rests on an interpretation of the way Jesus is referred to by the writers of the gospels. The original Greek forms of all four gospels call him, in places, "Iesou Nazarene" (e.g. Matthew 26:71; Mark 1:24, 10:47, 14:67; Luke 4:34; John 17:5; Acts 2:22). 


Translations of the Bible, from the fifth century Vulgate on, have generally rendered this into a form equivalent to "Jesus of Nazareth." However, it is not the only possible translation. Linguistically, "Jesus the Nazarene" would be at least as correct, and some critics have argued that it is more plausible given that city of Nazareth seems to have not existed at the time of Jesus; it is unmentioned in any contemporary history and it is not possible to prove its early existence other than by reference to the gospels.[ii]

Nazarene comes from the root word nazar referred to sanctifying one’s self to the service of God. Nazar is closely rendered etymologically to nahash Hebrew for serpent and nashamah or soul in Hebrew. The Nazarene’s were an esoteric[iii] sect connected or closely aligned with the Essenes. During this period of time there were three primary philosophical sects of Judaism—the exoteric[iv] Pharisees and the Sadducees and the esoteric Essenes.

As is usually the case, any esoteric belief system is a threat to the primary and more commonly accepted exoteric systems. It is easy to see why this is the case. In exoteric paradigms the ever-day materialistic consciousness is given total validity as the only true state of mind. Higher states of consciousness or intuition are not considered valid or real.  

Furthermore, in esoteric systems, people question. They question, dogma, doctrine and anything written that is supposedly literal truth. But exoteric paradigms do not want questions, only blind obedience to their system of belief. 

Esoteric followers are usually branded as cultist[v] (in a derogatory way), heretics and revolutionaries. In first century Judea, the Essenes were not the only esoteric cult or sect. There were the Nazars’ or Nazarene’s—a branch of the Essenes, and even offshoots of the Nazars’, Gnostics[vi] and others that “were more or less kabalistic[vii].”[viii] In the eyes of the Jewish ruling elite, these sects were heretical and troublesome.

We might think that Judea was isolated and only teeming with Romans. But that was not the case. There were many others from varying cultures and belief systems. Such as “Buddhists missionaries who had overrun Egypt, Greece, and even Judea[ix] and who influenced the Essenes. In addition there was a Babylonian and Chaldean influence; “the Jewish Scriptures indicate two distinct worships and religions among the Israelites; that of Bacchus-worship under the mask of Jehovah, and that of the Chaldean initiates to whom belonged some of the nazars, the theurgists,[x] and a few of the prophets.”[xi]

We have now arrived at a point in our investigation of truth where things begin to get interesting. One of the physical traits of a nazar was their long hair. Supposedly, this identifying mark extended as far back as the long-haired nazar Samson and the prophet Elijah. Jesus was also long-haired but he was not what you would call a strict Essene or Nazarene as he ate all kinds of food[xii], often drank wine and enjoyed life. 

Dogmatic doctrine whether it is from an exoteric or esoteric tradition is still dogmatic and doctrinal. In other words, both are not paradigms of equality open to all people. Sometimes the esoteric sects are as close-minded and prohibitive as the exoteric ones. And this is what Jesus discovered and rebelled against. Not only were the Orthodox sects more concerned with rules and regulations than natural law, so were the esoteric sects.

Jesus was a Nazarene and had been initiated through immersion bathing in the Jordan by John the Baptist “known as the ‘Great Nazar’.”[xiii] But he recognized the limitations and inequality of not only the Pharisees and the Sadducees but also the esoteric sects and saw the need for a ‘new way’—a new consciousness.

John being a descendent of the Scripture nazars was tolerated by the scribes and Pharisees of Jerusalem, “but the followers of Jesus evidently adhered to a sect which became a still more exasperating thorn in their side. It appeared as a heresy within another heresy; for while the nazars of the olden times, the ‘Sons of the Prophets,’ were Chaldean kabalists, the adepts of the new dissenting sect showed themselves reformers and innovators from the first.”[xiv]

And furthermore, Jesus, a student of John and the Essenes, “cannot strictly be called an Essene…. neither was he a nazar, or Nazaria of the older sect. What Jesus was, may be found in the Codex Nazaraeus[xv]…. 

‘Jesu is Nebu, the false Messiah, the destroyer of the old orthodox religion,’ says the Codex. He is the founder of the sect of the new nazars and … a follower of the Buddhist doctrine.”[xvi]

!n the eyes of the Nazarenes, John the Baptist was the only acceptable prophet, not Jesus. Because Jesus had broken away from John’s nazars and had established his own sect countering the other esoteric sects, he would be accused of being a false prophet, or as stated in the Codex, a false Messiah. So it’s clear that Jesus not only upset the Orthodox Pharisees and the Sadducees but also the esoteric sects.  

In her seminal work Isis Unveiled, H.P. Blavatsky states that “the motive of Jesus was evidently like that of Gautama-Buddha, to benefit humanity at large by producing a religious reform which should give it a religion of pure ethics; the true knowledge of God and nature having remained until then solely in the hands of the esoteric sects, and their adepts.”[xvii] She later writes: “In his immense and unselfish love for humanity, he considers it unjust to deprive the many of the results of the knowledge acquired by the few. This result he accordingly preaches – the unity of a spiritual God, whose temple is within each of us, and in whom we live as He lives in us – in spirit.”[xviii] 

After approximately two thousand years, Sherry and I can still vouch for the animosity and the grudge that is still held by followers of John the ‘Nazar’ against Jesus. It was November of 1998 when I was approached by a stranger in the medieval city of Carcassonne in the South of France. He asked me if I was going to visit Rennes-le-Chateau (later popularized by the publication of the Da Vinci Code), which I replied in the affirmative. He then went on to say that there were many mysteries connected with Rennes-le-Chateau and this part of France. Again I replied that I realized that fact. And then as he walked away, he turned and with a stern look said, “John is the true Messiah…!”

[iii] …. means the "inner" (eso-), in the sense of the inner consciousness; the contemplative, mystical or meditative transpersonal perspective.   This is something different from the ordinary everyday understanding of things, and can only be understood by intuition or higher mental or spiritual faculties….

Central to the distinction between Esoteric and Exoteric is that of states of consciousness.  An Exoteric philosophy or religion as one which is based on the normal waking state of consciousness, or a modified state of consciousness which is still pretty close to the normal waking state.  Any aspiration beyond the ordinary state of existence is discouraged.  For example, according to the religious person, "God created/loves you just as you are", so who are you to question what God has ordained for you by striving for some higher state of consciousness?  While according to the sceptical Materialist, there is no higher state beyond the rational mind anyway (all non-rational states of consciousness being delusionary).

[iv] …. means the "outer" (exo-), i.e. the outer or surface or everyday consciousness.  This includes both the scientific-materialistic and the conventional (or literal) religious perspective.  As it is based on the everyday understanding of things, and does not require any transformation of consciousness (and indeed considers any such transformation to be harmful), it assumes that the everyday mind alone can understand Reality.  (Things are not always that simple though, because in order to do, say, quantum physics one requires a mathematical intuition not shared by many).
